The Best Way to Seal a Leaking Aquarium

Getting started in the aquarium hobby can be an expensive undertaking. The cost of the tanks, filters, heaters and decorations you need can be quite high, but you can save a lot of money by seeking out quality, used equipment instead. Even if the tank you find has a leak, you may be able to repair the damage and use that aquarium as a home for your fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the aquarium with water and watch closely for the leak. Use a felt pen or marker to mark the exact place the tank is leaking.

    • 2

Use a cup to bail water out of the aquarium until it stops leaking. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to thoroughly dry the area around the leak. Clean the area as well as possible.

    • 3

Scrape the existing silicone away from the leaking area with a razor-blade knife. Scrape an area about one inch around the leak, as well.

    • 4

Apply acetone to a paper towel. Use just enough acetone to make the paper towel damp, then rub it over the scraped area and allow it to dry.

    • 5

Apply an aquarium-safe silicone sealant to the area you scraped. Use your fingers to work the sealant into the glass seam. Allow the silicone sealant to cure for at least 12 to 24 hours before leak testing the tank.
