How to Make Walls for an Aquarium

There are a number of reasons why you might want to make walls for your aquarium. Walls can be used to separate aggressive fish or split up non-compatible species. Breeders may use walls to keep males and females apart or to protect their fry from being eaten by larger fish. Whatever the reason, making and installing an aquarium wall can be accomplished with a few easy-to-find supplies and a few hours of your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your project before you begin. Decide how many walls you want in your aquarium and how high you want those walls to be. Clear your work area and lay out all of your materials.

    • 2

Measure the inside height and width of your tank. Mark the measurements on the Plexiglas, adjusting for your desired wall height. Cut out the wall. Lightly sand the cut edges to remove any burrs or sharp spots. Repeat this as many times as needed.

    • 3

Clean your tank with a little dish soap and towel it dry.

    • 4

Place a line of sealant along three sides of the Plexiglas wall and carefully slide it into place inside your tank. Use the ruler to make sure it is straight.

    • 5

Apply a line of sealant along the three edges of the wall where they meet the tank. Use your finger to create a smooth bead, forming a seal between the Plexiglas and the tank. Repeat this process on the other side of the wall. Allow the sealant to dry according to the instructions on the label.
