How to Silence a Vibrating Aquarium Pump

Keeping fish can be a very relaxing hobby, so the last thing you want is a loud aquarium pump interfering with the enjoyment of your tank. An aquarium pump is a necessity. It keeps the water aerated and powers your filter. But some aquarium pumps can get noisy, and the noise from those vibrations can shatter the calm in a quiet room. Fortunately, there are some techniques you can use to keep your aquarium pump quiet and stop it from vibrating its way across the floor.

Place the aquarium pump on the floor if the room with the fish tank is carpeted. Keeping the pump on carpeting can reduce the vibration and stop the pump from moving when it does vibrate. The carpet also helps to dampen any noise from the pump. Place the pump on the floor behind the aquarium, reducing the chance of accidentally spilling water on the pump.

Hang an aquarium pump shelf from the back of your aquarium. You can find these shelves at most pet stores, and they are designed to keep the pump safe and out of the way.

Unplug the pump and position it in the middle of the shelf. Anchor the pump to the shelf by taping over the pump and onto the shelf with duct tape.
