How to Dip Aquarium Plants in Hydrogen Peroxide

Growing live plants in your aquarium can be very rewarding, but at times those plants can be overwhelmed by algae and other contaminants. One of the most effective ways to kill algae on your aquarium plants is to dip them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide kills the algae, and you can transplant those freshly cleansed plants back into your tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a shallow bowl with a solution of 5 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Use a commercial 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution.

    • 2

Grasp the top of the plant firmly and dig carefully around in the substrate to loosen the roots. Pull the plant completely out of the water.

    • 3

Place the plant in the bowl containing the hydrogen peroxide solution. Leave the plant in the solution for 30 minutes to kill algae and other contaminants.

    • 4

Rinse the plant in a bowl of clean water. Place the roots into the substrate to anchor them.
