How to Make a TV Fish Tank

If you have an old console television set, you might think there is nothing you can do with it. They aren't likely to provide the kind of definition as a modern television, and frequently they are heavy and will cost you money to dispose of or recycle. Unless you are able to find a collector that is interested in it, the console television might feel like a burden. However, there are other options available to you. With a little construction and time, the television can become a gorgeous aquarium for some new fish friends.

Instructions

  1. Modifying the Console Television Set

    • 1

Saw through the top surface of the console television set with your hand saw and remove the top. Remove the backing of the console set.

    • 2

Remove the vacuum tube and other parts of the television set. Move slowly and wear protective gloves.

    • 3

Measure the top piece of the console set and cut a piece of MDF to the same size. Stain the MDF to match the rest of the console.

    • 4

Attach the MDF to the top of the console set using the hinges and wood screws. A screwdriver is sufficient, although a drill may make this step faster and easier. You need to be able to raise and lower the lid easily.

    Installing the Aquarium

    • 5

Measure the screen of the television. The aquarium you purchase should be slightly longer and taller than the screen size. If the screen is a non-standard size, you may need to have an aquarium custom built, which is something most aquarium stores can do for you.

    • 6

Place the aquarium tank into the console, tightly against the screen of the television. Run the power cords out the back of the console.

    • 7

Add aquarium gravel, plants, water and chemicals to the aquarium and allow it to run for at least 24 hours to ensure the filter is working properly and the water chemistry is balanced.

    • 8

      Add fish to the aquarium.
