How to Apply Silicone to the Corners of an Aquarium

Leaks are a serious concern for aquarium owners. Even a small pinhole-sized leak can quickly lead to a glass blowout or a complete seam failure. In order to fix or prevent leaks, you should apply a thin coat of silicone to the corners and edges of your aquarium.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any existing silicone from the edges and corners. New silicone will not adhere properly to an existing coat of sealant, so it's important to apply the silicone to a "clean slate." Use a flat razor to free any hard-to-remove beads of silicone, scraping from the edges toward the center.

    • 2

Clean the corners of the aquarium with cotton swabs soaked in rubbing alcohol. Allow the alcohol to evaporate thoroughly.

    • 3

Snip off the nozzle plug of a tube of silicone with a pair of scissors. Open the nozzle to a diameter of approximately 3/10ths of an inch.

    • 4

Hold the nozzle of the silicone tube in the corner of the aquarium. Draw the nozzle along the edge while squeezing the tube, applying a thin bead of silicone.

    • 5

Pull your finger lightly across the silicone, molding the silicone into the corner and removing any excess sealant. Wipe the extra sealant onto a clean, disposable rag.

    • 6

Place the tank in a dry, ventilated area, and allow it to dry and cure for at least 48 hours before use. Wash your hands thoroughly to remove any silicone residue.
