How to Clear Up a Cloudy Marine Tank

A marine aquarium clouds up for a variety of reasons. If the aquarium has just been set up, the cloudiness is nothing more than the tank's substrate that has been disrupted. A matter of waiting a few days before introducing fish to the tank will see the substrate in the tank settle. Another cause of clouding in the tank may be an algae bloom due to overfeeding the fish in the tank. Eliminate algae by using special chemicals to quickly clear the clouding.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the amount of food you are providing the fish in the tank. This reduces the potential for future outbreaks of water clouding. Feed your fish only as much as they can eat in three to five minutes, twice a day.

    • 2

Change half the water in the tank for fresh water. This will help reduce future clouding of the tank and speed the process of clearing the clouded tank with the chemical additive.

    • 3

Add the anti-clouding agent to the tank after having changed half the water. The rule of thumb is generally to add 1 capful of the chemical treatment for every 10 gallons of aquarium water. Follow the directions on the package to prevent overdosing the aquarium and potentially harming the fish. The chemical additive will temporarily cloud the water even more as it binds with particles in the water and gets filtered out.
