Things You'll Need
- 30-gallon aquarium
- Live or silica sand
- Aquarium rocks
- Filtration system
Instructions
Select an aquarium that is 30 gallons or larger in size. Orange toadfish can grow to about 1 foot in length, so they need an aquarium this size to move about comfortably. If you are planning to keep more fish with your orange toadfish, you'll need an even larger aquarium.
Fill the bottom of the aquarium with live sand or silica sand. Orange toadfish, like many other toadfish types, enjoy digging through the sand or burying themselves. The sand layer should be about 2 inches deep.
Add rocks to your aquarium. Pile the rocks so the fish can create a cave. Orange toadfish often feel calmer and less stressed if they are able to enter a cavelike structure. Make sure any rocks that you add to the aquarium are placed securely, as the orange toadfish may dislodge loose rocks as it digs, and the rocks could fall and injure the fish.
Install a filtration system. Orange toadfish eat a large amount of live or frozen foods. These eating habits can quickly dirty clean water, so a good filtration system designed for the size of your aquarium is key. You can use whatever type of filtration system you like. However, keep in mind that because the sand substrate is so thick, an undergravel filter may not work well in the aquarium situation.
Allow the aquarium to cycle for several days before you introduce your orange toadfish. Because orange toadfish are highly adaptable, you don't need to worry too much about pH, ammonia, nitrite levels, or temperature, as you would for almost any other saltwater aquarium. However, the water should not be at any extremes, such as having a very low temperature or a very high pH level. Allowing the aquarium to cycle, with the filtration system on, should even the levels out.
Keep the orange toadfish by itself, or select compatible tank mates. The orange toadfish can become aggressive, especially when it is kept in a small space. The orange toadfish can be kept with other aggressive fish of the same size, as well as other toadfish, but the size of the aquarium must grow accordingly.
