How to Install an Under Gravel Filter

An under-gravel filter can be used in aquariums, fish tanks or ponds. It generally consists of a plastic grate with legs that position it slightly off the bottom of the tank surface. The grate can be one or multiple pieces, depending on the size of the tank. The filter also includes one or more lift tubes. The filter works with the air pump to continually circulate the water in the tank to satisfy oxygen requirements of the inhabitants.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all water, fish, plants and gravel from the aquarium, pond or tank.

    • 2

Place the plastic grate in the bottom of the tank so that any circular outlets are on the back of the tank. If there is more than one grate, lay them next to each other. The grates may need to be clicked together, depending on the design.

    • 3

Slide one lift tube into each of the circular outlets. Twist slightly to insert the tubes as far into the outlet as possible to provide additional stability.

    • 4

Put gravel and plants back into the tank. Do not push gravel or plants under the plastic grate or position any object on the sides. There should be approximately 2 inches of gravel above the plastic grate.

    • 5

      Fill the tank with water.

    • 6

Connect a bubble wand to one end of a piece of air tubing. Connect the other endto an air pump port. Slowly slide the bubble wand into the lift tube until it rests against the bottom of the tank. Repeat this process for each lift tube. If you have more than one lift tube and only one connection port on the air pump, buy more pumps.

    • 7

Plug in air pumps and allow the water to circulate for the time specified by your fish specialist.

    • 8

Place fish in the tank when the proper conditions have been achieved.
