Instructions
Purchase a filter for your aquarium, enough gravel to cover the bottom of the tank to a depth of 2 to 3 inches and an assortment of plants and decorations. Also purchase an aquarium stand designed for the size tank you have.
Place the aquarium on the stand and make sure it is level. Cover the bottom of the aquarium with gravel to a depth of 2 to 3 inches. Rake the gravel until it is evenly distributed along the bottom of the tank.
Set the aquarium filter in place with the intake tube hanging inside the tank and the reservoir on the outside of the tank. Do not plug in the filter or fill it with water yet. Insert the filter cartridge according to the instructions on the box.
Place the aquarium heater along the back wall of the tank and fasten it with the included suction cups. Do not plug in the heater yet.
Insert the plants and decorations in the tank and use the gravel to anchor them. Place a large, shallow bowl in the bottom of the tank and slowly pour water into it. Continue pouring water into the tank until it is nearly full.
Plug in the heater and use the dial to select the temperature appropriate for the fish you plan to keep. Watch the thermometer to make sure the water reaches the temperature you set.
Pour water into the power filter reservoir until it begins to overflow back into the tank. Plug in the power filter and it should start pulling water into the tank.
Visit a pet store and purchase a few hardy fish. White clouds and zebra danios are both excellent choices for a new tank. New tanks have to go through a cycling process, during which the water quality can change rapidly. These hardy fish can withstand those changing conditions better than most.
