How to Clean Used Aquariums

Setting up an aquarium and raising fish can be a rewarding yet expensive hobby. The cost of a new aquarium setup -- including the tank, filtration system, heater, substrate and tank decorations -- can easily run hundreds of dollars. New aquarium enthusiasts can save a lot of money by purchasing a good-quality used tank and used accessories instead of buying new ones. It's easy to find previously owned aquariums in online ads and at yard sales. Once you buy your tank, though, you must clean it properly to get it ready for your fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the aquarium on a flat surface outdoors and fill it to the top with water, using a hose. Make sure that the water comes all the way to the top of the tank. Leave the water in the tank for at least one day and inspect it periodically for any leaks.

    • 2

Clean the interior glass surfaces thoroughly, using a soft sponge. Clean the outside of the tank as well then dry it thoroughly with paper towels or a soft cloth.

    • 3

Scoop the water out of the tank until there are just a few inches left in it. Carefully dump out the remaining water and turn the tank upside down to allow it to drain. Dry the tank thoroughly.

    • 4

Clean the exterior glass surfaces with aquarium-safe glass cleaner. Never use a commercial glass cleaner or chemicals, since they could seep into the tank and cause problems for your fish.

    • 5

Place the tank where you want it in your house and fill it with water. Use spring water if you live in an area that adds chlorine or other chemicals to the water. Purchase a water-quality test kit from a pet or aquarium supplies store and test the water before adding your fish.
