How to Estimate a Tank's Capacity

One of the most important measurements you'll need for taking care of a fish tank is its capacity, or how many gallons of water it can hold. The capacity is important when determining how much of a certain chemical to add to the water or what strength of filter to used. Most new aquariums come with this measurement printed right on the tank's label, but an older or used aquarium may not. You can calculate the capacity of the tank by taking a few quick measurements.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, depth and height of the tank in inches and write the measurements down. You will use these measurements to determine your aquarium's capacity.

    • 2

Multiply the three measurements from Step 1. The product is your aquarium's cubic area in inches.

    • 3

Multiply the cubic area of your aquarium that you found in Step 2 by 0.00433. The result is your aquarium's capacity in gallons.
