How to Use Ocean Seaweed in an Aquarium

If you are keeping a saltwater aquarium with fish or coral, seaweed can be a useful way to feed your fish and decorate your aquarium at the same time. There are many different species of seaweed, or micro algae, that can grow in saltwater aquariums, but some need to be grown in separate refugiums because they can grow out of control and dominate the aquarium habitat if not regulated.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the seaweed (sargussum seaweed or spaghetti algae) in a refugium to cultivate it. A refugium is a separate aquarium attachment that shares the same water supply as the aquarium, usually as a regulated outflow of water. The seaweed should be placed in a bed of sand in the refugium so that it can receive the proper amount of nutrients from the water that flows from the aquarium.

    • 2

Attach small pieces of the seaweed to rocks using coral glue, once the seaweed begins to grow.

    • 3

Place the rocks with the seaweed attached to it into the aquarium for your fish to feed on. When they have finished feeding on the seaweed attached to the rocks, take the rocks out of the aquarium and replace it with new seaweed.
