How to Clean Siphons

Whether you use a siphon tube for your home beer brewing kit, or a siphon to drain out your aquarium, you know how easily old water inside can create spots or promote algae growth. Siphons are typically made of rubber or plastic tubing, and they are used to create a vacuum that can be used to drain an object of fluid, such as an aquarium. These stains can be removed with a little work.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide into one end of the siphon while you hold your finger over the other end.

    • 2

Set the siphon in a full sink or wash basin. Use a pot, if need be, to help prop the ends up so the peroxide doesn't spill out.

    • 3

Let the peroxide sit inside the tube for three to four hours.

    • 4

Drain the peroxide out. Fill the basin with warm water and a small amount of detergent.

    • 5

Submerge the siphon in the water for 24 hours. Rinse the siphon out thoroughly with the faucet. Allow it to drip dry as much as possible and then used canned air or a blow dryer to dry it the rest of the way.
