Fish
-
The most common use for an aquarium is to house fish. Fish tanks can be set up as either saltwater or freshwater tanks depending on the species of fish. To set up an aquarium as a fish habitat, you also need a cover for the top of the tank, a filter, a light, gravel, ornaments and logs for fish to hide in and a tank thermometer to keep the water temperature at an appropriate level. Once all the supplies have been collected, the water in the fish tank should be treated to remove any harmful chemicals. After this has been done, fish can be added to the aquarium.
Reptiles
-
Aquariums are also useful as habitats for different types of reptiles. With the proper supplies, aquariums can make excellent homes for pet lizards, turtles and snakes. In these instances, aquariums should be large enough for the animal to grow into. Gravel, dirt or branches can be used to form a base at the bottom of the tank, as it should generally simulate a dry, hot environment. Since these animals are cold blooded, you will need to have a heat lamp running in the aquarium to make sure they stay warm. Also, make sure you securely fasten a lid on the top of the aquarium, as both snakes and lizards are known for being able to easily escape the confines of an aquarium.
Amphibians
-
Amphibians, such as frogs and salamanders, can also be housed in aquariums, with the proper habitat. Unlike reptiles, amphibians need a habitat that is either all or mostly water. Prior to purchasing a tank and the supplies, speak with a professional at a local pet store to make sure you are giving the amphibian a large enough habitat as well as an adequate land to water ratio. Amphibians also enjoy having an abundance of plants in their habitat, so make sure to include those as well. A breathable lid, such as a screen, is recommended to cover the aquarium, and water heaters and heat lamps should also be added to ensure the animals stay warm.
Plants
-
Aquariums don't always have to be used to house animals. They can also be used as plant terrariums. You can create a mini-ecosystem in an aquarium and house a number of small plants. Generally, it's best to keep plants with similar needs together in your terrariums, since you are keeping them in such a closed space. Due to the confines of the aquarium, make sure you are planting plants that like humidity, as the close proximity of all the plants means lots of moisture and dew in the environment. Make sure your terrarium is in an area where you can provide it with sun or a UV lamp as well as shade.

What Are Aquariums Used For?
There are numerous sizes, shapes and types of aquariums available today. Home aquariums can range in size from 5 gallons to upwards of 200 gallons and are generally made of glass or acrylic. While most aquariums are designed and marketed towards fish owners, there are also other uses for these tanks.
