How to Hook Up a Wet & Dry Trickle Filter to a Tank

Wet and dry filters, also known as trickle filters, allow water to flow out of the tank using an overflow. Once the water flows out of the tank it collects in the drain pipe and the water is channeled to the top of a tower (a tall thin portion of the filter that contains biological filter material to clean and oxygenate the water). Installing a wet and dry filter in your tank can be beneficial to your fish and plants because it keeps the water oxygen rich and provides biological filtration.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the main filter by installing the protein skimmer and skimmer pump. Place the assembled filter underneath the aquarium in the desired location.

    • 2

Attach the siphon overflow box to the prefilter box and then hang the prefilter box on the back of the tank. Then put the U-shaped tube, or siphon tube, into the prefilter box.

    • 3

Connect the spiral drain hose to the slip fitting on the prefilter box and then put the other end to the main bulkhead on the filter you placed underneath the aquarium.

    • 4

Hook up the back return spout to one end of the return line and put the other end to the return pump. The return pump is often sold separately from your wet and dry filter system.

Attach a length of 1/4-inch vinyl tubing to the barbed output of the protein skimmer cup. The other end of the tubing should go into a collection bin, such as a plastic bucket or an empty 2-liter soda bottle.
