How to Kill Suspended Algae in Aquariums

Suspended algae is characterized by its discoloring of your fish tank's water with either a light or dark green tinge. Instead of settling along the base of the aquarium or along the edges, the algae hovers in the tank. Suspended algae can occur when you have too many fish or excess food in the tank; or, the tank does not see enough UV light. The safest method of removal for your fish is with an Aquarium Diatom Filter.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an aquarium diatom filter and diatomaceous earth refills from your local fish store.

    • 2

Open up the diatom filter and add the diatomaceous earth to the filtering chamber.

    • 3

Insert the filter into the aquarium and plug the filter's power cord into the wall. Flick the filter's "On" switch to start the filtering process.

    • 4

Scan the contents of the aquarium within the first two hours to see the filtration process. Tanks with larger concentrations of suspended algae may take longer to clear.

    • 5

Remove the filter when the process is complete.
