How to Use a Wet/Dry Aquarium Filter

A wet/dry filter is used to provide the necessary chemical and biological filtration in an aquarium. This type of filter uses a sump pump, which is preferred by many aquarium owners. The filter works in stages as it first removes particulate matter, and then removes organic pollutants. There is a physical drop that provides aeration until finally the water goes through a biological filter to remove bacteria. The water collects into a sump pump and is then pumped back into the aquarium.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the wet/dry filter in your aquarium. The wet/dry filter is normally placed underneath the aquarium.

    • 2

Fill the aquarium until water starts to flow inside the overflow box found inside the aquarium. Add water to the pre-filter box found outside the aquarium. Add enough water until the water starts to drain into the main filter underneath the aquarium.

    • 3

Start the siphon in the filter. If the sump pump does not immediately fill with water to cover the pump, add water directly to the sump container. The pump needs to be completely covered in water to work properly.

    • 4

Start the protein skimmer and the sump pump when the pump is completely submerged. Continue to add water to the sump until the indicated water level is reached. The sump will have a water line mark.

Make any adjustments to the air valves that connect to the venturi valves located on the protein skimmer. Tiny adjustments are normally needed to achieve the proper air flow.
