Cloudy water in an aquarium is a common problem among fish owners. Several causes can be attributed to cloudy water from algae buildup, uneaten food and a clogged filter to new accessories and gravel. Instructions

    • 1

Remove any excess food or waste from the water using a mesh net.

    • 2

Check the filter, hoses and pump to the aquarium to make sure they are running properly by circulating the water. Install new cartridges if the filter cartridges are dirty or need replacing. If after several hours, the water is still cloudy, proceed to Step 3.

    • 3

Test the water's pH, nitrate and ammonia levels with the testing kit. The testing will determine whether you need to adjust these levels by adding drops to obtain an appropriate balance or replace some of the water in the tank.

    • 4

Remove about 20 percent of the water from the tank and replace it with fresh water. By removing some of the old, cloudy water, waste is removed and bacteria will have a hard time thriving with the added fresh water. Wait a couple of hours and the water in the aquarium should clarify.
