How to Clean a Magnum Micron Filter

A Magnum micron filter is designed to be used with a Magnum filtration system in a fish aquarium. Depending on the size and type of aquarium, the micron filter should cleaned every two to four weeks. The filter helps prevent cloudy and bad-smelling water, as well as preventing algae from forming and keeping the water safe and clean for fish. If the filter is not cleaned, the water quality can be impacted, as can the water flow from the filtration system.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the Magnum micron filter from the aquarium's filtration system. This process varies based on the type of filtration system and size of the filter. If you are unsure how to remove the filter, consult the filtration system owner's manual.

    • 2

Rinse the filter in cool to room temperature water. Loosen all dirt, algae and debris with your hand. Only use water and your hand. Do not use any brushes, clothes or sponges. Continue until no further residue is being removed.

    • 3

Mix one part chlorine bleach to three parts water to create a cleaning solution. The amount of solution to make varies based on the size of the filter. The filter will need to be completely submerged in the cleaning solution, so you may wish to mix the solution in a bucket or the sink.

    • 4

Add the filter to the solution. Add more solution as needed until the filter is completely submerged. Allow the filter to soak overnight.

    • 5

Remove the filter from the cleaning solution. Rinse the filter under cool to room temperature water until the chlorine smell disappears. The filter can now be reinstalled in the aquarium's filtration system.
