How to Restart an Aqua Clear 20 Filter

The AquaClear 20 Power Filter is designed to work with aquariums up to 20 gallons in volume. A built-in pump moves water out of the aquarium and through a layer of foam, a layer of activated carbon, and a layer of BioMax (an inert ceramic material designed to support beneficial bacteria). Occasionally after cleaning or other maintenance the AquaClear 20 won't restart, and a bit of TLC may solve the issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the filter case with water until the excess water drains back into the aquarium.

    • 2

Adjust the leveling device at the base of the filter until it is perfectly level. Turn the device until the appropriate setting has been reached. Even a slight misalignment can keep the filter from priming successfully.

    • 3

Spin the impeller blade in the motor at the base of the filter case manually by using a straw or chopstick. Extend the straw down through the filter's water case into the opening on the impeller cover and gently rotate the impeller clockwise. Ensure the impeller spins freely.

    • 4

Replace the "U" tube, the tube that draws water out of the aquarium and into the filter water case. Apply gentle pressure to the tube to ensure its base clicks into place over the opening in the impeller cover at the bottom of the filter case.

    • 5

Replace the cover on the filter, and set the water-control lever on the top of the "U" tube to its maximum setting for the initial start-up of the filter.

    • 6

Plug the AC power cord firmly into the wall power socket.
