Instructions

    • 1

Purchase and set up your aquarium. Choose a type that suits the room you are putting the aquarium in, and one that is big enough for the fish you want. A pet shop or fish breeder will be able to advise you on this.

    • 2

Install a fish-tank heater. This requires different steps depending on your type of heater, so read the instructions fully to prevent making the water too hot for your fish.

    • 3

Install your filtration system. Again, the setup depends on the type of filter selected. Large tanks may require a larger filter, or more than one.

    • 4

Add decorations. Gravel or sand in the bottom is common, along with ornaments to decorate the tank and entertain the fish.

    • 5

Add water and turn on the filtration system. Your choice of gravel or sand may cloud the water initially, but your filter should clear it.

    • 6

Add saltwater mix according to the instructions. You can buy this at a pet store. Test the water with a hydrometer to check if salt levels are acceptable. An appropriate range is between 1.021 and 1.024.

    • 7

Place any live plants you wish to add. You may need to partially bury the base, or add a weight to stop the plant from floating.

    • 8

Wait 24 to 48 hours to allow the tank to cycle and the filter to produce bacteria, which make the tank thrive.

    • 9

Add your fish. You may find it best to add one at a time, letting them settle between new additions.
