Eheim Filter Information

Proper aquarium filters are extremely important for the health of the tank ecosystem. Eheim offers filters for a variety of uses, sizes and types. They are offered in most popular pet stores.
  1. Types

    • Eheim offers hang-on, internal and external aquarium filters. The hang-on filters fit around the side of the aquarium glass pane and are used for aquariums with volumes up to 52 gallons. Each hang-on filter comes with at least one large biofilter cartridge with a volume of 0.5 pint, which (depending on the model) is supplemented with further cartridges, according to the Eheim website. The internal filters are best for smaller aquariums, tanks used for breeding fish, or for tanks where quarantining fish is necessary. They are extremely quiet and small, because they are suctioned to the glass inside the aquarium. External canister filters sit outside the aquarium and use a series of tubes to treat or purify the tank. They are generally used for larger aquariums up to 396 gallons.

    History

    • Eheim, founded in 1949 in Germany by Gunther Eheim, was originally a maker of technical toys. The first aquarium filters were based on the centrifugal pump technology used for model railways.

    Cost

    • Eheim filters cost from between $20 and $30 into the hundreds of dollars, depending on the type and size of the tank.
