How to Prepare Glass to Reseal an Aquarium

A tight seal prevents leaking in aquariums, vital if the tank is to hold water. Clear silicone, a strong waterproof substance, holds the glass panels together. Over time the silicone seal around the glass panels breaks down and leaks may occur. Instead of throwing out the tank, reseal it with fresh silicone. Silicone is readily available at both aquarium and home improvement stores. Use 100 percent silicone to ensure it is both durable and waterproof.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide a single edge razor blade or utility knife between the silicone and the glass. Cut the silicone free from the glass then peel it off. Remove as much silicone as possible, but leave the silicone between two pieces of intersecting glass in place.

    • 2

Wash the glass with clear water to remove any algae buildup or dirt. Dip a lint-free cloth in rubbing alcohol or vinegar then wipe the glass clean a second time. Alcohol and vinegar removes any oils from your hands, which ensures a good seal with the silicone.

    • 3

Place the applicator tip of the silicone tube at the beginning of the seam you are resealing. Apply even pressure as you pull the applicator across the stem, releasing an even bead of silicone.

    • 4

Dip your finger in clear water. Draw your wet finger across the silicone bead, smoothing it to an even finish while ensuring it adheres evenly to the glass.

    • 5

Place the tank in an area where it won't be disturbed. Allow the silicone to dry for two days before using it.
