How to Make an Aquarium Out of Stuff Around the House

Any glass or plastic container that will hold at least a gallon and a half of water can be turned into an aquarium, but a key element of maintaining a healthy fish environment is choosing the right type of fish. Goldfish, which constantly shed their scales, require a filtered aquarium. A colorful betta fish, also known as a fighting fish, is a good choice for an aquarium you can create yourself from a large recycled glass or plastic jar.

  • Large glass or plastic jar
  • Betta fish

Instructions

    • 1

Collect some rocks and gravel and wash them thoroughly with soap and water.

    • 2

Line the bottom of the jar with the clean rocks.

    • 3

Fill the jar with water and let the water age for 24 hours. Add 10 drops of water conditioner to remove the chlorine from the water.

    • 4

Place the betta bulb plant in the water.

    • 5

Add one male betta fish. Two fish will fight with each other and the female fish are not as attractive.

    • 6

Cover the jar with a lid with holes for air to prevent the betta fish from jumping out of the jar.

    • 7

Place the jar in an area away from drafts or direct sunlight and maintain a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees.

    • 8

Feed the betta fish every day.

    • 9

Clean the jar every week by removing the fish and all water and scrubbing the inside of the bowl and the rocks with a mild soap.
