How to Remove Algae From Aquarium Decor

Regular aquarium cleaning and maintenance is necessary in order to keep proper nutrient levels as well as a neat appearance. Sometimes conventional methods of cleaning aquariums and decor, such as a scrub brush and water, just aren't enough to remove thick algae buildup.

If left untreated for extended periods of time, algae can completely cover and discolor aquarium decor and even hardware, such as air pumps and filtration systems.

Contrary to popular belief, chlorine bleach can be used to remove algae from aquarium decorations. This highly effective method of cleaning requires special care.

Instructions

  1. Removal and Decontamination

    • 1

Prepare your workspace by taking all decor to be cleaned, as well as cleaning agents, bucket and test kit out of doors. This will prevent the chlorine bleach from discoloring floors or furniture inside the home.

    • 2

Pour four gallons of water into a 5-gallon bucket . Add 2 cups of chlorine bleach, or 1/2 cup for every gallon of water used.

    • 3

Place decorations into the bucket and allow to soak for 10 to 15 minutes or until algae has fallen off.

    • 4

Remove ornaments from bucket. Dispose of bleach solution and rinse bucket extremely well.

    • 5

Fill bucket with warm water. Place decorations into the bucket. Treat with dechlorinator as directed by product's packaging.

    • 6

Using a chlorine level test kit designed for use in swimming pools, test bucket's chlorine levels. Dechlorinator may need to be used multiple times in order to achieve a zero chlorine level.

    • 7

Place decor back into the aquarium. Add dechlorinator to the tank as directed by the product's packaging.
