How to Drill a Glass Aquarium

Occasionally, it is necessary to drill a hole in a glass aquarium; saltwater aquariums sometimes need special equipment requiring an overflow. Not all aquariums can be drilled; tempered glass is prone to cracking or breaking when drilled. Plate and annealed glass tanks are best for drilling. Drilling glass requires special equipment and patience to prevent breaking the aquarium, but can be done at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Diamond glass drill bit
  • Plasticine or plumber's putty

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the tank, and place it on a sturdy work surface so the surface to be drilled is horizontal and level.

    • 2

Place a layer of duct tape on the inside of the tank where the hole is to be drilled. This prevents the inside surface of the glass from chipping as the bit goes through.

    • 3

Roll the plasticine or plumber's putty between your hands to create a rope about 1/2-inch thick. Place this in a circle around the area to be drilled, and press it onto the glass so it sticks. This ring is used to hold water to lubricate and cool the glass and drill bit as you drill.

    • 4

Pour water into the putty ring. Put the drill bit in the drill.

    • 5

Drill slowly straight down into the glass, letting the weight of the drill apply pressure. Too much pressure will break the glass. Keep water in the ring the entire time you are drilling. As the bit penetrates the glass, keep the drill steady. Tilting or twisting the drill can break or chip the glass. Be patient, as this may take time to complete the hole.

Drill slowly and with light pressure as the bit penetrates the inside of the glass to prevent chipping or cracking.
