How to Lower Alkalinity in Reef Tanks

You don't have to be a chemist to keep a reef tank. But you do need to know a few things about maintaining the delicate balance of alkalines so that you can provide a suitable habitat for your aquatic pets. When the alkalinity levels of reef tanks get too high, it can jeopardize the living conditions of the organisms. Consequently, reefkeepers must check the levels on a consistent basis.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Plant peat moss in the reef tank to bring down the pH level of the water. Peat moss emits tannic acid, which assists in the binding of calcium and subsequently reduces the amount of alkalinity that is present.

    • 2

Purify the water in the reef tank with a tap water purifier. Tap water purifiers remove minerals, such as salt, from water. When high alkalinity is a problem, drain the tank water and refill it with the purified tap water, which will neutralize the chemistry of the tank.

    • 3

Add a pH-reducing solution that you purchase from a pet or aquarium store. The solution is made of chemicals that lower the alkalinity and raise the acidity to neutralize the tank water.
