How to Eliminate Oxygen Bubbles in a Saltwater Aquarium

An overabundance of air bubbles in your saltwater aquarium can have adverse effects on the aquatic habitat. It can result in trapping the saline properties of the water and forcing them up to the surface, thereby reducing the salinity of the rest of the water. Additionally, the bubbles can become stuck in the gills of the fish. That's why aquarium owners often take steps to eliminate or reduce oxygen bubbles when they become noticeable in the water and at the surface.

Install a protein skimmer in the aquarium, since these are effective for reducing oxygen bubbles in saltwater tanks. They sit on the outside of the tanks with the tubing connected to the pump and the skimmer inside the aquarium. After the initial break-in period once you set up and activate the skimmer, you will notice a reduction in the amount of air bubbles that are present.

Check the aquarium plumbing for leaks. If any of the pipes or tubes have leaks or cracks, this may be causing the excessive amount of oxygen bubbles. Locate the plumbing parts, such as the return lines, and visually inspect them to see whether they are in adequate condition.

Assist the bubbles that have latched onto rocks, coral or the sides of the glass tank in their float to the surface by scrubbing the affected area with a soft, clean sponge. The smaller the bubbles are, the longer they will take to reach the surface and be eliminated. By helping them detach from their locations, you can expedite the process of reducing them in the water.
