How to Build Exotic Aquariums

The word 'exotic' brings to mind visions of tropical climates and rich, beautiful culture. This idea can be applied to turn a traditional aquarium into something exotic. Purchasing a number of items to enhance the color, richness and beauty of an aquarium, are just a few ways to turn your standard aquarium into an exotic paradise for your fish.

Things You'll Need

  • Place colorful pebbles along the bottom of the aquarium. You should be sure they remain level, between one and two inches thick, depending on the size of your aquarium. Set up the pump and filter and the heat lamp at this time, if they are needed for your exotic aquarium.

Fill the aquarium with warm water and mix the saltwater mix into the tank. This will provide the tank with the salinity needed for your aquatic life to breathe and thrive in your exotic aquarium. Regulate the water temperature and pH balance suitable for the fish, coral, plants and live rocks.

Place larger plants at the back of the tank and smaller plants at the front. When you purchase your plants, they should come with information on how large they are expected to grow. Add colorful coral, with rough and smooth textures, to the tank. You may need only two or three pieces of coral.

Add the live rock. There are several kinds of live rock, but you want to choose live rock that will not grow so large as to overshadow the colors of the plants and coral.

Add bright and colorful exotic saltwater fish such as angel fish, anglers, chromis, jawfish and scorpion fish. You can also add other types of fish, such as sea horses, crabs and starfish. Just make sure you purchase the proper food to feed all the fish you place in your exotic aquarium.
