How to Use Aquarium Salt in Fresh Water Tanks

Aquarium salt provides electrolytes that many freshwater fish require for optimal health, but too much can be a threat to them. The right amount depends on the size of the tank, so you need to know how many gallons of water your aquarium holds before adding any salt. Aquarium salt does not evaporate, therefore it should be added during major tank water changes, not with each partial water change.

Instructions

  1. Adding Salt to a Freshwater Aquarium

    • 1

Remove any live plants from the aquarium. Many freshwater plants will not tolerate aquarium salt.

    • 2

Measure 1 rounded tbsp of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons (19 liters) of water, or 1/2 tsp of aquarium salt for every 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of water.

    • 3

Pour the measured aquarium salt onto the water surface. The salt will sink to the aquarium floor.

    • 4

Observe fish for any change in appearance or behavior. If fish lose coloration or appear lethargic after the addition of aquarium salt, siphon salt from the aquarium. If fish do not regain color and vigor, contact a local pet store for professional advice.
