Things You'll Need
- 200-grit sandpaper
- Syringe
- Plexiglass solvent
Instructions
Lay one piece of the Plexiglass flat on a firm flat work surface and then place the end of the other piece of Plexiglass on the piece of Plexiglass laying flat on the work surface to create a 90-degree corner.
Inspect the corner to ensure that the two pieces of Plexiglass fit tightly together. If you find gaps in the corner, sand the end of the Plexiglass sheet with the 200-grit sandpaper to even out the edge of the sheet.
Fill the syringe with Plexiglass solvent by inserting the tip of the syringe into the bottle of solvent and pulling the plunger backward.
Rest the tip of the syringe at the area where the two pieces of Plexiglass meet and push the plunger of the syringe to force solvent into the connection. If you are solvent welding pieces of Plexiglass thicker than 1/4 of an inch, you will need to push solvent into both sides of the corner to ensure that the entire thickness of the Plexiglass is softened by the solvent.
Allow the solvent to soften the Plexiglass for one to three minutes; then apply firm pressure downward on the piece of Plexiglass standing vertically and hold the pieces together to bond the Plexiglass pieces together.
Use the same process to solvent weld each piece of Plexiglass. Allow the Plexiglass solvent welds to cure before using the glued pieces of Plexiglass. The bond created by the solvent will strengthen as it cures. Full curing time will vary depending on the temperature of the work area, but it can take several days to achieve a full-strength bond between the solvent welded pieces of Plexiglass.
