How To Secure an Aquarium to a Wall

Aquariums can brighten up any room, whether they are fresh water aquariums or salt water aquariums. One of the most important aspects of aquarium setup is securing it so that it does not fall over. There are many ways to secure an aquarium, from traditional stands to wall mounting. Mounting aquariums onto a wall requires the use of special mounting brackets which can support the weight of the aquarium as well as the water and gravel that it contains.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on a stud finder and place it against the wall where you want to mount the aquarium. Run the stud finder along the wall until it emits a beep, which indicates the presence of a wall stud. Mark the location with a pencil and continue using the stud finder until you locate another wall stud. Mark the location of the second stud with the pencil as well.

    • 2

Place an "L" bracket against the wall in the location of one of the wall studs. The horizontal part of the bracket should be at the bottom facing toward you. Insert 1 1/2 inch screws into each of the holes in the bracket using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Install another "L" bracket in the same manner at the location of the other wall stud.

    • 4

Cut pieces of double-sided, foam sticky tape using scissors and line the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the "L" brackets with the tape. Remove all coverings from the tape to expose the sticky surface.

    • 5

Place the bottom of the empty aquarium onto the "L" brackets. Press gently, but firmly into the wall to secure the aquarium to the sticky tape.

    • 6

Insert a "U" clip over the inside top edge of the aquarium at the location of the "L" bracket. Slide the clip downward so that one side of the clip is against the inside of the aquarium and the other side of the clip is between the wall and the "L" bracket. Insert additional clips at each bracket location.
