How to Use a Gravel Siphon

When cleaning an aquarium, perhaps the best way to clean the gravel is with a vacuum gravel siphon. A vacuum gravel siphon is generally made up of a transparent 2-inch-wide plastic tube connected to a length of transparent rubber hose. The tool will not work, however, if it is not used correctly and it can become frustrating.

Instructions

    • 1

Place two buckets on a sturdy surface on a lower level than your aquarium.

    • 2

Submerge the entire siphon apparatus under the water in your aquarium. Make sure that the entire gravel siphon fills with water.

    • 3

Cover the open end of the hose with your thumb or the palm of your hand. Cover it completely, so it forms an airtight seal.

    • 4

Remove the hose from the water while still keeping the end covered and the tube end fully immersed.

    • 5

Hold the hose in one of the buckets and remove your thumb or hand from the end. The water will flow into the bucket under its own power.

    • 6

Move the vacuum tube through the gravel in the tank. This will stir up and remove sediment and waste that has settled into the gravel.

    • 7

Switch the hose to the second bucket once the first one fills up. Since the siphon runs on gravity with no "off" switch, it will continuously run until the tank is empty. Empty the first bucket when the second is filling up. Once you return, continue to move the siphon tube through the gravel to draw out dirty water.
