How to Measure Hexagon Aquarium

You may find that--even though the hexagon aquarium is attractively shaped--it can be difficult to calculate the volume if it has been awhile since you took high school geometry. You may remember from geometry class that the volume of an object is the product of its base area times height. The area of a hexagon can be broken down and calculated as the area of six equilateral triangles. With a little geometry lesson, calculating the volume of your aquarium is easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and the length of one side from the inside of the hexagon in inches.

    • 2

Calculate the area of the hexagon base. The area is the length of one of the sides squared times the square root of 3, divided by 4. Multiply this answer by 6 to get the area of the hexagon base.

    • 3

Multiply the area of the base by the height to get the volume of the aquarium.

    • 4

To convert to gallons, multiply the volume by 0.00433.
