How to Use a Saltwater Hydrometer

A hydrometer is an essential piece of equipment for anyone interested in maintaining a saltwater aquarium. This device measures the specific gravity of water, showing you the aquarium water's salt content. Keeping the salt at the right level, which is typically between 1.020 ppt (parts per trillion) and 1.025 ppt, is important for the health of your fish. Hydrometers are easy to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the hydrometer is clean of any previous water and properly dried to prevent contamination and an inaccurate reading.

    • 2

Place the empty hydrometer in the water, holding the opening at the top just below the surface, and allow it to fill completely.

    • 3

Remove the hydrometer and place it on a flat surface.

    • 4

Watch the hand of the hydrometer. It will point to the proper reading.
