How to Tell if a Protein Skimmer is Working

Reef aquariums are a beautiful and educational addition to any home. Unlike an average freshwater tank filled with gold fish, the saltwater used in reef aquariums requires a different kind of filtration system. Protein skimmers are necessary to keep the tank clean, but if the skimmer is not working, it must be replaced immediately for the sake of the exotic fish, plants and other wildlife you keep in your reef aquarium. The tank should be checked daily for signs that the protein skimmer is not working.

Instructions

Check the protein skimmer collection cup. This is located at the top of the protein skimmer, above the tank. It will be clear, allowing you to look inside to see what it has collected. You should see a mixture of foam and brown matter (the organic matter). This will show the skimmer is working properly. Empty this cup when full to ensure that the protein skimmer will continue to work properly.

Listen to the buzzing a protein skimmer makes. A high-quality, and more expensive, skimmer will create a low buzzing noise. The less expensive versions will create a louder buzzing noise. This buzz or hum should always be audible when near the aquarium. If the skimmer noise is louder than normal, you should pay attention to changes in the tank or the collection chamber. The skimmer may need to be replaced.

Observe any changes in tank cleanliness. You will notice a build-up on aquarium rocks, plastic plants and other non-living items in the tank if your skimmer is not working properly. An improperly operating protein skimmer will cause problems with the health of the live plants and animals in the tank. The skimmer must be replaced immediately.
