How to Filter a 210 Gallon Fish Tank

Filtering a 210-gallon fish tank is more time-consuming than filtering a much smaller tank, but necessary for health reasons. It is absolutely essential to filter a freshwater fish tank, since an enclosed aquarium cannot self-clean. The two best ways to filter a large aquarium is via mechanical and chemical filtration processes. Using these methods will reduce the toxic buildup in your tank and make your glass appear cleaner. If you allow your fish tank to accumulate debris, your fish may suffocate or develop a fatal disease.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a mechanical filter that is designed for a 210-gallon tank. You can find one at any pet supply store or online.

    • 2

Assemble the filter by first attaching the water intake piece, which is a hollow tube through which the tank water enters. Attach the water intake tube to the bottom of the main filter piece.

    • 3

Insert your filter cloth (or floss) into the top of the main filter piece. This piece is what makes the water clean. Check the filter every week to see if it needs cleaning. You will notice a buildup of gunk inside it when it needs to be cleaned.

Attach the entire filter to your 210-gallon tank. Usually, you can hang the filter over the edge of the tank and it will hold itself upright. Smaller tanks usually use a suction cup to hold the filter in place.

Fill your tank with water and add your chemical conditioners to kill any bacteria in the water. The conditioners neutralize metals, toxins and chlorine from the water. Activated carbon is good for removing dangerous matter from the water. The amount you should use depends upon the brand. Activated carbon can come in hard tablet form or powder form.
