How to Setup a 30 Gallon Aquarium

A 30-gallon aquarium will provide space for larger fish or several smaller fish and is a good choice for most homes. A larger aquarium will require less care and maintenance and is much easier to keep clean. An aquarium full of fish will provide entertainment for the entire family and watching fish is a proven stress reducer.

      Place the aquarium on a steady base such as an aquarium stand or other sturdy surface. Keep in mind that a full 30-gallon tank can weigh over 300 pounds. Choose a location that is not in direct sunlight.

      Rinse all the parts of the under-gravel filter that will be in the water. Assemble the filter in the tank according to the instructions on the package. Each filter with be installed differently but none are difficult.

      Rinse 40 lbs. of gravel in warm water. Be sure to rinse well to avoid any debris or dust that may be in the gravel. Place the gravel in the bottom off the tank and smooth it out until it is even.

      Place the hanging heater in the back of the tank. It will need to be in an area where you can see it clearly.

      Add any plants or decorations that you prefer. Placement of the decorations is a personal choice; there is no wrong way.

      Place a bowl or small plate in the bottom of the aquarium. Pour water into it slowly. This will prevent the water from dislodging the gravel or ornaments. Add water until it is an inch below the top of the tank.

      Place the top firmly over the tank and secure. A razor blade is handy to cut out small holes for heater and filter accessories.

      Let the water sit for an hour to regulate the heater before plugging in the filter and heater. Wait several days for the tank to become stable before adding any fish.
