The Best Kind of Reef Lighting

Determining which lighting to buy for a reef aquarium, owners should keep several things in mind. There are many different sources of light, and any of them could be appropriate. The main goal is for lighting to help keep fish and the reefs healthy.
  1. Environment

    • Choose lighting sources that mimic the natural environment of the aquarium's species. Owners should also keep in mind that there is no one standard appropriate for all reef aquariums.

    Day/Night Cycle

    • The sun rises and sets over the ocean, therefore fish often fare better when exposed to day and night cycle lighting. Use lunar LED lights for approximately 12 hours a day.

    High Output Fluorescent

    • High output and very high output fluorescent are smaller than traditional fluorescent lights and work well for most saltwater fish and nano reefs but may be expensive to replace.

    Power Compact Fluorescent Lights

    • These moderately-priced power compact fluorescent lights are a good choice for virtually any type of aquarium.

    Metal Halide

    • Metal halide lights are typically good for coral reefs and light-loving fish, but can be expensive.

    Tips

    • Owners should choose a light source with a Kelvin rating between 9,000 and 12,000. Also, keeping the water clean and clear helps lights work effectively.
