How to Change Aquarium Bulbs

Aquarium light bulbs are different than normal light bulbs. Average household light bulbs promote algae blooms in water, and so should be avoided for aquarium usage. Common aquarium light bulbs are florescent, and come in various sizes depending on what size aquarium you own. Be sure to note the bulb size and wattage that your aquarium requires. They can be purchased from a local pet store or an online retailer. Florescent bulbs need to be replaced every six to eight months, or when they burn out.

Determine the size and wattage of your aquarium's light bulb fixture. If your aquarium doesn't currently have a light bulb in it, there should be instructions on the fixture as to what size light bulb it requires. If no instructions exist, it is best to bring the fixture to the pet store in order to avoid buying the wrong bulb. Purchase the proper bulb and return to your aquarium.

Unplug your aquarium light fixture and remove it from the top of the tank. Do not try to change the light bulb with the fixture over the tank and with live electricity running through the fixture. If it falls into your tank you could possibly electrocute your fish and yourself. If you're inexperienced with aquarium lighting, it's best to sit the fixture on a flat, dry surface before attempting to change the light bulb.

Remove the old light bulb and replace with the newly purchased bulb. The process of unscrewing the bulb can depend on the bulb. Florescent bulbs typically clip into the fixture. Incandescent bulbs will in most cases screw into the side of the fixture. Once you've finished, replace the fixture onto the top of the aquarium. Be sure that the fixture is secure on top of the tank before plugging it in. The aquarium should now be lit.
