How to Raise the PH in Water

A water's alkalinity can be a very important factor in the health of your pet fish. Though many fish prefer a neutral water of around 7.0, some, like African cichlids or saltwater fish, prefer a higher pH. There are many chemical buffers and expensive water ionizers that can do this for you, but there's a safer, less expensive method that's also easy to implement. However, if you wish to use a water ionizer to raise the pH of your water directly from the faucet, then that, too, is a simple task.

Instructions

  1. Raising pH

    • 1

Place crushed coral into a mesh bag.

    • 2

Tie the bag shut with a rubber band.

    • 3

Rinse the bag of coral under a faucet to remove any loose particles or dust.

    • 4

Place the bag of coral either within the back of your filter or at the bottom of the tank.

    Water Ionizers

    • 5

Attach the top of the ionizer directly to your faucet's tap.

    • 6

Turn on the ionizer using its power button and turn on your faucet.

    • 7

The ionizer will filter the water and provide an electrical charge. It will disperse water from two different outlets. Select the negatively charged water from the corresponding outlet, which has a raised pH.
