Sea-Monkeys are a species of brine shrimp with the scientific name Artemia nyos. They have been sold as pets since the 1960s, and they are bred for their size and hardiness so they are more suitable as pets.
How They Come to Life

The shrimp are able to go into a state of cryptobiosis, or dormancy. This can be brought on by exposure to extreme dryness, cold or lack of oxygen. However, the shrimp become active again as soon as their environment improves.
What They Eat

Most Sea-Monkey kits include a packet of growth food. However, because brine shrimp eat algae, so you should allow a controlled amount of it to grow in the tank.

The company that sells Sea-Monkeys says the name comes from the shrimp's "funny behavior and long tail."
