Decide what kinds of fish you want. Each species grows to a different size, has different colors and has different habitat requirements. Choosing decorations will be easier if you know the needs of your fish. Also proper decorations will help create an environment for happy and healthy fish, and they will spend less time in hiding.

Purchase or create a background and attach it in place. A background creates a custom look. It also provides a less stressful environment for the fish and can hide electrical cords or tubes.

Choose a filtration system that can be easily hidden and is easy to maintain. Use the type that will work best for your aquarium set-up and can be hidden behind the tank or inside the stand. If the aquarium is on a table, the hang-on-back filter (HOB) is recommended because it is easily concealed by attaching it to the aquarium.
