A Clean Brush
-
One of the best tools to remove stuck-on detritus from an aquarium is a good strong bristled brush. Buy a brand-new brush and dedicate it solely to cleaning aquariums so it does not become contaminated.
Water
-
Nothing cleans an aquarium as well as water. Tap water straight from the garden hose is perfect for cleaning an aquarium, as it is normally room temperature, plus working outdoors means no mess.
Vinegar
-
White vinegar removes calcium buildup that has accumulated on the panels of the aquarium. It is particularly helpful in the cleaning of former saltwater tanks.
Razor Blades
-
Razor blades are useful for cleaning tight areas that cannot be reached with a brush, such as next to the seals. Exercise extreme caution when working with a blade, though, as one wrong slip could damage the seals of the aquarium and ruin it.
Squeegee and Clean Spray Bottle
-
To clean the exterior of the tank once it is set up, use a squeegee and a dedicated spray bottle full of water. This is the safest means of cleaning viewing panels, as chemicals can leach through the porous glass into the tank. Always avoid using any type of glass cleaner.
