How to Connect External Filters in Fish Tanks

Having an aquarium in your home or office adds a peaceful tranquility to the atmosphere that is almost unmatched. Setting up and maintaining them, however, is not such a serene experience, but using an external hang-on filter can add a bit of ease to a dirty job. Unlike sump filters, which are closed loop, external filters that hang on the back are cheaper and more easily maintained for the novice.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the aquarium up far enough from the wall to allow for the filter to hang on the rear of the tank.

    • 2

Hang the filter on the back of the tank and place any filter media that you want to use into the filter. Most filters are replaceable, and there are myriad filters on the market.

    • 3

Fill the tank with water to capacity.

    • 4

Use a cup to fill the filter with water. This will prime the filter.

    • 5

Plug the filter into the power source, making sure to add a drip loop in case of any over-pour or leaks.
