How to Clean Aquarium Pumps

Aquarium pumps help keep water clean and clear. In nature, water naturally filters itself with the flow of a stream, river or ocean waves. But an aquarium needs a source of movement that directs water to filtering areas to create the healthiest environment for fish.

Instructions

      Remove 1 qt. of water from the aquarium and place it in a bowl.

      Unplug the filter and remove it from the tank. Set it in an empty bowl.

      Open the back of the pump and remove the filter for cleaning. The two components of the filter are the sponge and filter screen. Remove the filter screen from the sponge, discarding the screen.

      Rinse the sponge in with some tank water removing any debris. If the sponge is too dirty to clean, this may need to be replaced with a new one.

      Place a new filter screen in the sponge and set in the remaining tank water.

      Clean the interior and exterior of the pump with a cloth removing any lime or algae deposits on the pump.

      Replace the filter in the back of the pump and seal it securely.

      Place the pump back in the aquarium. Fill the aquarium with water and plug the pump back in.
