Instructions
Rinse the 10 gallon freshwater fish tank you purchased with clean water. Do not use any soaps or cleaning solutions as the residue may kill the fish. Check for leaks at the same time. Also rinse all decorations, filters, plastic plants and gravel substrate that will go in the tank.
Position the tank on a sturdy stand out of direct sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight to discourage excessive algae growth in the aquarium. Be sure there is access to an electrical outlet to plug in the filter, light and heater.
Dump the rinses aquarium gravel or other substrate into the tank and smooth it out with your hands. It should be at least 1.5 inches deep and have a natural slope up to the back and sides. If you intend to put plastic or live plants in the tank, the substrate should be thicker. Live plants may require an organic substrate under a gravel layer.
Position rocks and other freshwater fish tank decorations where you want them to sit in the aquarium. It is recommended that taller decorations sit near the rear of the tank and shorter ones at the front. Leave a flat area near the front for maximum swimming and feeding area for the fish.
Insert the bases of plastic plants into the gravel, covering them well for sufficient anchorage. If you are using live plants, bury the roots carefully where you wish them to grow. Some live plants should be attached to ornaments with monofilament fishing line. Fill in more with tall plants near the back and sides and include short varieties in the front.
Attach a 10-gallon fish tank heater to the back inside glass of the aquarium if you are getting tropical fish. Set up the filter and either insert it into the tank or hang it on the rear edge with the water intake tube properly positioned. Position any bubbling airstones or hoses you desire. Be sure all the plugs can reach the electric outlet.
Carefully place a plain white paper plate or similar on the flat portion of the fish tank gravel. Use a bucket and hose or pitchers to gently pour water onto this paper plate. The plate will help disperse the water safely through the tank without allowing the force to disturb the gravel or decorations.
Remove the paper plate when the aquarium is at least halfway full and continue filling it to the top. Plug in the heater and adjust it to the correct temperature for the fish you plan to purchase. Prime the filter pump and turn it on. Let it run for at least 24 hours before adding the fish.
Add fish to the tank slowly to prevent death due to ammonia build-up. Be patient and allow each new pet fish to acclimate to the new aquarium before purchasing more. You can also use fish-less cycling with household ammonia before adding any fish. Never overstock the fish tank.
