Instructions

    • 1

Choose a sturdy television console. If your chosen fish tank is 20 gallons, it could weigh up to 190 pounds when filled with fresh water, and the console must be capable of supporting it.

    • 2

Gut the television console by removing parts out the back. This step requires caution because old television parts can still carry an electric charge, even if they haven't been turned on in years. Additionally, parts like the television tube can shatter very easily. You may wish to have an electrician do this step for you.

    • 3

Remove the top of the console. Depending on the console, this may require a saw. The top will be used as a lid.

    • 4

Now it is time to add hinges to make a flip-top lid for easy access to the aquarium. Drill appropriately sized holes (depending on how large the screws are for the hinges) into the rear interior side of the console and into the lid. Use a screwdriver to screw hinges into place.

    • 5

With a measuring tape, measure the interior of the cabinet and the dimensions of the television screen. Your fish tank should be slightly larger than the screen. You will need to leave approximately 3 inches of space between the top of the aquarium and the lid of the console in order to accommodate the light fixtures and hood. You'll need an additional 5 inches of space between the back of the aquarium and back of the console, and 1 inch on all other sides.

    • 6

Using the saw, cut one or several ventilation holes in the back of the console.

    • 7

With a paintbrush, coat the interior of the console with two or three layers of lacquer or stain to protect it from condensation. This step should be completed out of doors or in a room with good ventilation.

    • 8

Insert the fish tank and run wires for the lights, air pump and heater out the back through the ventilation holes. Fill the tank with water slowly, to verify that the console will support its weight.

Now you may add fish to complete your project.
