How to Build a Fish Tank Filter

Fish have been kept as pets since the days of ancient Rome. Around 50 A.D., a glass pane was added to three walls of marble to form the first side-view aquariums. Aquariums have come a long way since then. There are now machines that basically clean aquariums for us. These machines use filters, but filters can often be expensive. Using a few simple items that can be bought at nearly any store, however, you can make your own filters and save money in the long run.

Remove the old filter from your fish tank. Use this filter to measure how big to make your new filter.

    • 2

Use the vent filter to make a space for the activated carbon to be added. The vent filter may be the right size already, but check to make sure. It should be roughly twice the length of your original filter, since it will be folded over. Put hot glue on the edges of one side of the filter (not the end).

    • 3

Fold the other half of the filter onto the side of the filter with glue on the edges. Press down firmly and make sure the filter sticks together, forming a pocket for the activated carbon.

    • 4

Use the stapler now if you choose to do so. This is optional, but helpful. Many filters without a plastic casing will swell up when placed in the aquarium filtration system. Place one staple directly into the center of your folded-over filter. This will prevent the filter from swelling up.

Add your activated carbon. Usually 2 to 4 tbsp. is sufficient. However, if you have your old filter, judge how much medium is in the old filter, and fill your new one accordingly.

Put one to three staples into the open end of the filter to ensure it stays closed. Insert your filter into your filtration device and let your fish enjoy.
